Chinese Terracotta Army Exhibit

The Terracotta Army figures are statues of the Warriors and Horses of Quin Shi Haung, the First Emporer of China. The terracotta figures date back from 210 BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers near Xi'an, Shaanxi province near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. The figures vary in height (183–195 cm - 6ft–6ft 5in), according to their role, the tallest being the generals. The figures include strong warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Archeologists have estimated are that Terracotta Army there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses; the majority of which are still buried in the archeological pits. The fact that these terracotta figures have survived thousands of years is an incredible feat. Since their recent discovery, these figures are filled with mystery and awe as they bring Chinese history back to life.

These figures are on display at the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. from November 2009 to March 2010. Because this is a special exhibit, you have to order tickets in order to get in. Ticket prices are as follows. Ticket Prices are as follows:

  • Adults: $12

  • Children (ages 2-12): $6
  • Group Rate (10 or more): $8 per person
  • K-12 School Groups: $6 per person, one adult free for each group of ten students

CHICAGO TRIP!

Our chicago trip was amazing!
There will be a more in depth blog post about it but here are some pictures to tide you over.

Some of the legendary Chicago skyline from our architectural cruise.
**alert! art historical fact, don't fall asleep! :)** Chicago is known for its architecture;  the great Chicago fire happened right around the same time that all the technology for skyscrapers was being perfected [steel, elevators, fire proofing, etc.] --so they had the opportunity to rebuild their city in the new modern style of steel and class.

Deep Dish Pizza from the legendary Gino's.  Yes the sauce is on top- but it was delicious!

We found the Sear's Tower!  It is soon to change its name but it is the tallest building in Chicago, and was at one point the tallest building in this country.

Some of us outside of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

More soon!

Review: Nudashank- Wise Guise

By Caitlin Gill

Nudashank, an independently run gallery, located on the third floor of the H&H building in downtown Baltimore, is founded and run by local artists, and art patrons Seth Adelsberger and Alex Ebstein. The gallery space recently held a Closing Reception for an Exhibition titled Wise Guise. Although I was unable to attend the opening, the closing provided an opportunity to celebrate the artists and their work before it was returned to private studio spaces or in some cases new owners.

Wise

The Gallery hopes to expand the Baltimore art scene, by providing a space for local as well as non-local artists. Residing in the same building with such galleries as the Whole Gallery, Gallery Four and Floristree, Nudashank allows for the audience to experience multiple art spaces at once. Although the galleries are not directly connected to one another as far as exhibitions, shows and venues, the audience is free to wander and explore the different spaces. This access to multiple shows, generates a sense of community often disregarded in other gallery spaces, and allows for a relaxed viewing environment. However there is nothing relaxed about the artwork. Wise Guise features artist working and responding in multiple mediums to various subject matters, the show retains a sense of cohesiveness through its tonality, and application. Most of the work displayed in Wise Guise has a strong sense of pattern, tongue and cheek subject matter and non-local colors. Overall the work has a graphic sensibility juxtaposing geometric imagery, along with figural and organic components in order to illustrate some underlying narrative. Differing as much in stylistic choices as in narrative the work as a whole seems to benefit if not grow alongside one another, each setting the tone for the next, as you move through the gallery. This Gallery not only provides opportunities and exposure for young artists, it also allows for the audience to become part of a movement.

Nudashank and its co-curators/creators (Alex Ebstein and Seth Adelsberger) have succeeded in creating a positive creative environment for both artists, as well as art supporters, I strongly suggest this gallery to anyone who is interested in art, or just looking for some cultural stimulation. Nudashank introduces a serious purpose, while maintaining an informal and comfortable atmosphere which is ideal for any art community. I urge you to be a part of this happening not only is it founded and organized in Baltimore, it is also accessible to any interested individual. For more information you can join the Facebook group Nudashank, or visit their blog at http://nudashank.blogspot.com
